How to Engage and Retain Millennials in the Workplace

Millennials - those born roughly between the years of 1980 and 2000 - are already the largest generation in North America, and it's only a few years until they become the largest population employed in North American businesses. It's extremely likely they will become the most influential generation since the Baby Boomers - but they are about as unlike the Boomers as you can get.

If you find yourself with a growing number of Millennials in your workplace, it's vital to understand how to keep them engaged with their work. Doing so well will help encourage them to do the best possible job, and encourage them to stay under your roof rather than leaving the next time they're offered a better deal.

4 Ways to Increase Millennial Engagement in The Workplace

  1. Train and promote from within

    Millennials desperately want to widen their experience and training sets. If they feel like they're stuck in a "dead end" job, it's virtually guaranteed they'll bail at the first possible opportunity. Offering robust training programs, or even job-rotation opportunities, is a clever way to keep them around.

  2. Offer telecommuting and other flexible work schedules

    Millennials are accused to doing things online - preferably as many things as possible. If they're doing a job in the office they know they could do just as well from home, they're going to chafe. Look for ways to implement work-from-home plans and other alternatives to sitting in an office from 9-5 every day.

  3. Become more socially active/aware

    Millennials are extremely politicized, and resent businesses which appear to be solely focused on profit. Consider expanding your social commitments, charity work, volunteer operations, etc. This won't just make your Millennials happier to work for you - it's great PR to bring in more Millennials as customers too!

  4. Provide feedback, but don't micromanage

    Millennials generally prefer to be given a task, and then left alone to complete it their own way. A cycle of task-completion-feedback is an excellent way to nurture this, while still ensuring they remain aware of their job performance and needed areas of improvement.
